What were the impact of tariffs in the 1920s?

It hindered or stopped global trade between nations. It was protectionism in it's worst form. However, the United States should protect it's economy more than it does today as the Chinese and Japanese protect theirs by use of tariffs and currency value manipulation against the dollar. In other words, they (Japan and China) aren't playing fair.
